Hi Gat Fans: As I said else where I have been thinking about engraving the medallion directly into the main casing. Now that someone has posted a picture of one I know what they look like and I can do a fair facsimile and cut it rite into the casing. Now I have an esoteric question. Should I add some “Frills and Dressings”(ending of John Wayne movie El Dorado) to the engraving job. I did a little experiment today. What do you think?

Thank you.  The picture on the bottom of page four shows only a stud.  Maybe you can tell me how to post pictures as I am new to the site?  Perhaps something is wrong with my computer?  I will do a re-start.

After re-start I can now see the entire picture.  Thank you.

Another step I\'ve put off, but now is done. At this stage i\'ve not soldered the parts to the recoil plate and may not.


The drawing called for 2 screws to hold the cocking ring in place but I put three. That will hold a pretty good load.

I sawed out a segment of the cocking ring for the cocking switch and milled the proper amount off the bottom but left some to keep then connected together and vice gripped the cocking switch shaft and got the guys @ work to weld them together. Their GOOOOOD!

That all looks good, but...Wouldn\'t have it been easier to make the recoil plate on a lathe? And how come your small holes around the edge of the recoil plate look like they are in the wrong spot?

boy ,pictures sure make this site worth its weight in gold! this gun looks like its getting close to test firing.we did some final assm. yesterday will post soon,as far as the engraving goes, a little goes a long way, if you like it, do it! keep up the good work.

I am putting these pictures on here for three reasons. 1. To enspire others to build a Gat. 2. So others can QC them and point any bluner that I may have made. 3. I know of no one around here that would know or care what I have made. Machine work as a hobby is kind rare! So feel free to check my work and ask questions...-



Well Now to answer your Questions \"Wouldn\'t have it been easier to make the recoil plate on a lathe?\" I could have made the recoil plate on tha lathe but I had a CNC sitting there and I could program it and walk away while it was running. And I didn\'t have a lathe @ home at that time. The recoin plate was made several years ago. I put twice the holes that the drawing calls for. I overdo some things. In the pictures below, I still need to :: counter sink the No.2-56 holes, turn down the outside dia. of the recoil plate, finish the cocking switch, cut the track in the cam box, solder in the 1\\4\" square sleeve. It goes on and on. :shock:

I see now! Those damn holes are HARD to get right in the cam!!! I was hoping you had a \"better\" way....

For those who do not want a cocking switch, you can just back the screws out on the bolts a little further. But this makes them cock ever time. So it is somewhat dangerous.

A little more progress: Some of my machining time has been used up by yard work and there will be more as the summer progresses not to mention all the “Honey Do” jobs there always is. I did manage to make some odds and ends as pictured below. I’m not sure if it will cause a problem but I’m thinking about milling a couple of pockets in the bottom of the Base Plate 48-29 to relieve some weight. See the blacked out areas in the pic below. I can’t see why all that mass is necessary. Also, I made the crank arm out of titanium. That\'s all I had in 1/8\" stock. It may not solder to the ¼’ hex but I’ll let you know.[attachment=9202:DSC04475-id=485.JPG]

Man! look at all the scratches I\'m getting in the top of my computer desk.... Oh well, I like to play with latest part I\'ve made.. I\'ll just have to live with the scratches.

A dab more progress: The rails were easy to build. But in a previous post I mentioned that I made the crank arm out of Titanium. Well, I found out that Ti will not solder. It just beads up on the surface. So I remade it from steel and soldered it rite on. I hope it will hold.

**WARNING**WARNING** “Your emergency evacuation thruster pack is armed. Once ignited, It has a five second burn duration and may not be aborted. To abort count down, lift the control arm up……\" No No NO that’s not the correct warning.. The correct warning is as I machined the rails they warped. So, I had to skim off the top edge. I suggest that they should be made from 1 1/8 X 3/8 stock so you’ll have extra material to face off the top to get them straight…

NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN!

Well, Gat Fans, It may be some time before I bore you with more rambelings. No 4/27/2011 my house was hit by a CLASS 4 Tornado. My 28\' X 28\' Living room is history.The cars underneth are kinda banged up. The house is a total lose. They just got the power poles and security light backup. As you can see my reloading room, at the top, has a great sky light. Insureance agent says the house will have to be demolished and rebuilt. The open door in the pic goes to my work shop. I just finished cutting the wires to my mill and hacksawed the conduit to my lathe. Yesterday I cut the wires & took down my phase converter. It\'s all dead now. No more metal chips till it is moved to my new place and wired back up. So, Don\'t let me down. All you guys will need to make lots of Gat parts while I\'m out of commission........

Oh  man, I am so sorry. At least you came out okay. Were you at home when the storm hit?

The devastation here in Birmingham is just beyond belief also. We had damage around us in the Wednesday morning storm and the county road in front of the house was closed to general traffic until the following Monday due to downed trees and utilities. The Wednesday afternoon storm passed about 5 miles north. There are still a large number of people missing here. A casual friends son was in Tuscalossa when the storm struck and took shelter in a bathtub. Other people were in the hall next to the bath and watched as he and the bathtub were pulled out by the storm. The boy or the bathtub have not been seen since.

It is a setback but be thankful you are still around to take the photos.

The Wife and I ran to the basement, the area behind the open door you see in the pic. I squated down beside my 800lb. safe.  The news says it was a class 4. 150 to 170 MPH winds. A tree fell accross my 500Gal propane tank and knocked off the gages and it was squirting raw propane 100 ft in the air while lightning flashed all around. We had to \"BUG OUT\" but we didn\'t have a \"BUG OUT BAG\" I\'m here to tell you that everybody needs to have a BUG OUT BAG ready to go.

Glad you are ok. I feel bad complaining about all the rain up here in Ohio, Goes to show you it could always be worse. A lot Worse.

 That must have been a terrible experience to have to go through. I am sorry that you and your family had this experience, and am glad that everybody is alright phisically anyway.
