Easy cast iron repair (welding)
« on: March 27, 2016, 08:21:44 PM »

I bought some EZ weld tig wire to try on a couple of parts. I couldnt be happier with the results! Basic tig welding to fix cast iron. No pre heat, No post heat!!! These were all parts that were going to be scrapped if I couldnt fix them so what the hell!

Getting ready to buy a Tig welder.  Lots of options but basic argument is Lincoln or Miller at higher price and repairability OR one of the China machines, Everlast, Vulcan etc. more features, better warranty at less cost.  Any opinions?

This welder has temped me for quite a while now,  so far I have resisted the temptation.    It gets fantastic reviews and has a good warranty.

I am restoring an old Wilton bullet vise. I used this tig wire as well. It works surprisingly well.

I figured I would post a follow up. I started restoring this really beat up vise for my home shop. It had the rear jaw stick welded to the body of the vise (poorly welded) I used the ez tig wire and was able to build back up all the missing metal from the prior “repair” got the first coat of paint on it tonight. One more tomorrow and some good clear to top it off. The new jaws arrived this week to finish it off. The welded areas were fairly tough to clean up. Grinding was fine but filing and machining were tougher than expected.

This was purchased as a little busy work for slow days at my day job. Slow days and eBay are a bad combination. Lol should make a nice addition to the shop.
