Started Working On The RG-G

Hi all, I joined the forum about a year ago when I decided to build a Gatling gun. I got sidetracked for awhile with back problems and surgery on the lower back to fix the problem. I\'ve finally gotten back to work on it and I thought I\'d post up a few pictures of the progress. There is still a long way to go but now that I can make parts again I am enjoying it. I bought the bolts and barrels from Cutter and I have to thank him for cutting the box cam for me. I turned and faced the blanks, sent them to him and got a completed cam returned, Thanks Cutter. I\'ve turned and threaded the barrels and milled the hex on the front. Started on the bolt carrier and front and back plates.

   The carriage is mostly complete, found that it takes a lot more time than I thought but it looks good. I think the carriage is one of the things that really make the Gatling gun look cool. Here are a few pictures of the progress so far, I\'ll be posting more as the parts get completed. Have a good one.

Looks great.  You sure are right about the carriage.  It takes a lot of time and patience.

Nice work. I like the black hubs a rims on the wheels, nice contrast to the brass. Did you make the wheels yourself. It would be good to find a source for them. Not sure I\'m ready to add wheel wright to my resume at this point in life.

Thanks, great site. Price is high but worth it. I\'ve seen some of the wheel posts on this forum and they look like a lot of effort to get a decent looking wheel. I\'d rather spend my time cutting metal.

I bought the wheels at Nolt Wagon Works, they are a local company near me in Ephrata, PA. They are made from steam bent Hickory and are built to do real work. I paid $100.00 each for them which included the hubs and bearings. I don\'t know what shipping would cost but if you are interested here is the phone number.   717-354-2732       Have a good one.

Oh I should mention that the wheels that I bought are 24\", that is the smallest that they sell. I then made the trail longer so the base for the gun would set level, with the axle 2\" higher than If I had used 20\" wheels as called for in the prints.

Got to work in the shop on Sunday and a couple evenings this week so I made some progress. Threaded the barrels into the rear plate, they need some fine tuning but they\'re close. The bolt carrier is close to being finished, that was the part I was most concerned about but it\'s turning out well. It\'s good to be able to work in the shop again and this is a fun project.

I\'m still making progress and with some advice I got from Cutter I think what I\'ve made so far will work fine. I pressed hex bushings in the carrier and the front and back plates. And assembled the barrels, bolt carrier, and front and back plates.

They all go together well after some fine tuning. I numbered the barrels, bolts and plates in order to keep track of what goes where. The bolt carrier needed some filing but now the bolts slide smoothly.

  I bought a 22 cal. finish reamer from Brownells and I was wondering how deep to finish the rim. From what I have been reading on the web I think I\'ll go about .043 deep for the 22 cartrige rim. Does anybody have any input as to if that would be about the right depth? If so please let me know. Thanks and have a good day.

Here is a drawing for a chamber. Not 100% sure it will show up, but the rim depth is called out .043-.051

gbull thanks for the diagram, I chambered the barrels last night and used .043 for the head space. I\'m still making parts but at a slower pace than I had hoped for. I finished the bolts and used cutters latest extractor version, I think he got the idea from the 10-22 extractor. I have to thank cutter again for the help and information he has given me during this build. He very kindly loaned me a jig to machine the bolts for the extractors and even loaned me a completed bolt to copy from. Thanks cutter that jig works great. 

  The bolts are now completed and the notches are cut is the rear barrel plate and the barrels for the extractor clearance. I tested the extractors by removing the firing pin from a couple of bolts, setting the bolt carrier on top of the rear plate while the barrel group was vertical and dropping a couple shells in the barrels. The extractors worked well and extracted the shells when I pulled the bolts back.

  The box cam installation is complete in the brass cam carrier and the flats are milled on the sides. Some of the frame parts are complete but not assembled yet. I\'m still plugging away and one of these days there will be some shells put through it. Here are a couple of pictures of the progress.

Progress looks great !       Cutter has done so much to make gat guns possible for the builder,  he is a super guy.     I am curious what the air grinder mounted in the lathe with the slitting saw was used for?

Poor mans tool post grinder... Pretty slick!

I used the slitting saw to part off the extractors. I ran the lathe at 70 rpm and with the DRO the width was perfect every time.

I have been making parts again but the progress is slower that I would like due to ongoing back problems but I am making progress. I think I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Here are a few pictures of progress that I have made in the last few months.

 

 

 

 

 

 

I\'m going to keep plugging away and soon I\'ll be trying a trial assembly.

I’m quite envious. I have my plans and started acquiring some material for my first build attempt. I know I don’t have the free time at the moment so I haven’t started yet. Hopefully this winter I will get going. Looking forward to the test fire video
