I am building the D&E gun so the barrel length may be a little different.   I also used ruger 10-22 barrels for my gun.   The barrels were about 5 inches longer than required so I cut the excess off the muzzle end before turning them down in diameter.    The cut off piece included the front sight dovetail so that did not present any problem.   The chamber end dovetail slot used for clamping the barrel was totally removed turning them down to the proper diameter.

So, I do not understand why the front sight dovetail is presenting a problem?   Did you not cut the barrels to rough length before turning?       I don\'t think the RG&G barrels are that much different in length than the D&E gun.

Well if you were lucky enough to get 10 Ruger 10/22 barrels to do your build with at a fair price -- way to go.

When I was shopping ebay for barrels the best that I think that I could find for Ruger 10/22 barrels was about $25 per barrel (and up) shipped to me. I just bought 10 - 22 cal LR barrels as best as I could. Now of course I\'ve found that some barrels are better than others for this build. Three of the barrels had very large dia\'s. Several had deep screw holes and other have one or more major dovetails. But all in all I\'m going to make it work out. Planning to finish roughing in another barrel today and start another one. I have a couple of 10/22 barrels that are nice and if I have to use those to make up for one with a dovetail that I can\'t cut off or work around I will before it\'s all over and done. Really just as I was starting this build I was planning to get the set of 10 ready to go from dburn, it was the best deal out there. Went I was ready to order I emailed and he emailed back that he was out and did not have any in the works for a while. So off to ebay barrel buying and cutting down myself. Learning on the way I might add.

George
I guess that I should add there were some rear sight dovetails and screw mounting holes holes that were deeper than the front front dovetail and there was less than 12 inches between the two problems. Should add some barrels are going to be simple to do. Just cut to size and turn down and off we go.

Enjoy your build.

Sunday afternoon update.
Well finished roughing in two barrels to where I want them just over 12 inches long and .60 inches in dia.. Ready for the final turn downs on the big lathe. Have 2 other barrels roughed just not sure of where I\'ll make the final 12 inches from. Have 6 others that are going back to the band saw to be cut down again. I\'ve learned a little more on placement between dovetails and holes. So next step is to cut 6 and face 6 barrels then reset the lathe and turn them to down to the .60 rough in size.
Hope that you had a nice weekend.
Some times you need to turn the barrel\'s between centers with a lathe dog if they are blanks to start with. Nothing worse than having your chambers off center.
bruski
I would STRONGLY echo bruski\'s advise on final turning your barrels.

I true the bore centers of my barrels to accept the lathe centers using the \"throat\" section of my .22 chambering reamer turned by hand. I normally will chuck a short bar in headstock and turn a 60 deg. center so it runs dead true to the spindle. I let the tail of the dog drive against the chuck jaw. The tailstock is fitted with a standard live or dead center and the barrels is turned. I use this approach for any shaft where I need all the diameters to run true to each other, especially when the shaft has to be flipped end for end to finish. To face and cut the center tapers, the barrel may also be held in a Steady Rest.

This assures that the bore is at least centered on the two ends. It also allows the barrel to be flipped end for end or removed from the spindle and replaced without indicating or runout.

Works well for me - YMMV.

Wish that I could spend more time on the lathe but. Well I did get another half of a barrel roughed in tonight. Several more half\'s to go then on to the next project of this build. At least I have a better way and plan for doing this.

Hope that your builds are going well.

Finished the other half of the last one and started the first half on another one tonight. 4 down 1/2 of one so 5 1/2 to finish roughing in. Then to the good lathe and try to finish them completely.

Enjoy your builds.

Well I hope that you folks had a great weekend.
I worked on a few other things. Getting parts together for something else was one of them. But did chuck up and start roughing in another barrel. Just got a few passes in before we took the dog to the area dog park so he could run with the other dogs. Also got some grass cutting in. First cuts of the season.

Update - got to get in a little shop time and roughed in another 1 and 1/2 barrels. Saw a bolt that our lead guy has been working on and it\'s looking good. So while the lathe is spinning this week I\'ll start cutting a few pieces of cold rolled rod to get ready to start a few bolts. All I\'ll be doing to start with is cutting to length and then facing off one end. Then go from there.

Got some more shop time in and finished roughing in the last barrels. Now to take them to the main shop lathe and finish them someday. I hope to start cutting up rod that I got from Home Depot tomorrow to start making the bolt bodies. How about that going to work on something that did not come from a scrap yard. Our lead man has done most of the basic work on his 11 bolts (one extra). So following him.
Hope that everyone got some shop time in today. Where I\'m at it was a great day temp wise.

Slow moving but still working on the bolts. Barrels and then the bolts, whats next? That\'s up to our point man Wes. He plans we follow.
Enjoy Easter and Try to Remember the Reason for the Season.

Hope that everyone is doing well. Got to go and use the big workshop last night and use a Nice \"big\" South Bend lathe and got to take several of my barrels down from the rough stage to a almost finished (as far as the turning goes) stage. Still need to hex the end, turn down the 3/8\" at the end and cut a small slot, etc.. But working on it. As we say not a quick easy build.
Will go back to working on the bolts for the weekend on my small HF lathe.

Hang in there Rocker. You are going through the toughest part of the build with so many parts of the same.

Well things have been going on with getting more scrap from the junk yards. Our lead man Wes is leading the way with his build. Of course with our group making 5x of everything some things go slow. Like 10 bolts plus 1 spare makes 55 bolts to be made. And so on and so on.

If I can get it to post this is what Wes Gatling looked like a few weeks ago. He is working on the oak wheels and carrige right now. I dug up a pile of scrap oak that I had in the garage so we are keeping that cost down at least.

I\'ve been following your blog with interest Tim. Glad to see the recent revamp of this site didn\'t lose your thread here. Looks like all posts from the \"Gunsmithing\" section were totally lost. Too bad since I was following the one there on a Gatling gun shotgun. Nice pic of Wes\'s Gatling you posted. Can\'t wait to see more pics of the builds. Let\'s get together soon and go shooting our crankfires again.  Merry Christmas to you and everyone also.

Bill.
