Well as stated looking to buy your left overs or any good deals on things that we will need for our group builds. Remember it\'s the list of materials times 5.
If you have found any great deals on anything that we will need please share the source if you would be so kind.
One of hardest to find at a fair price so far is Brass 3 inch round. Any ideas on where to get a good price on that??

Thanks for any ideas.

Rocker I\'ve been able to source most of my raw materials from Online metals. If you don\'t have any place local to go to they have a large variety of metals and shapes. Prices seem fair, and delivery right to your door sure beats running around.

I\'m glad that your happy getting it to your door.
Our local \"scrap yard\" is about 1 mile round trip out of my way on the trip to work. So I normally load up some scrap to sell to them then buy from them, normally spend far more than I make for the scrap.
Also I\'m trying to buy for 5 complete bill of materials. 5 folks in our group.
Last trip there I bought stuff for another project and found a brass 2.5 inch round bar 15.75 inches long. Well if your making a 2 piece bold carrier a 2.5 inch round 1.5 inches long takes care of the front part.
costs -- online metals for 12 inch bar 2.5 dia is -- One Ft. (12\") Length - $150.14 -- Plus shipping
local scrap yard a 15.75 inch bar 2.5 dia cost me $72.00 -- plus sales tax 7%

After that I should also note that the best price that I\'ve found so far for the brass 3 inch dia bar 12 inches long is at onlinemetals.com  --  still trying to do better on that also. I search ebay a lot also.

As the buyer for 5 different folks I\'m trying to find the best deals that I can for everyone. So asking for help from everyone.
On another forum I talked with someone and I\'m buying and having shipped down to Fla from Canada some Brass. Looks like about (after very high shipping) a savings of about 30% to 40%.

So still looking for Brass and anything else that I can get for our group\'s bill of materials.

Any ideas??

I made the carrier block from 12L14 steel for cost reasons.  The wheels I haven\'t looked at yet.  Somebody mentioned melting down a lot of old cartridge brass to cast them...

My local scrapyards all suck and won\'t let you buy anything from them anymore.  All goes straight to China.

Update. Meet with one of the other members of the group tonight and talked about a lot of stuff and he said that he found a scrapyard that sells Brass by the pound. Best part is they have some 3 inch round. $4.50 a pound and that will make a 12 inch piece of brass around $117.00 which is about 1/2 of the online metals stores. Sure hope that he finds a lot of other stuff while he is there. They also have some scrap steel at that yard.

But still if you have any left over pieces that you think that we can use on our builds then please let me know and we can go from there.

Again Thanks for all of the sharing of plans and ideas that everyone has done.

Correction
The scrap yard ended up charging Wes $4.95 plus tax a pound. Still about 1/2 of any of the online metals places charge.
He bought a 3\" round 10\" long and several other items. I saw a pic of what they have in stock for brass and and believe Wes when he states that he thinks that we can buy enough stuff from them to do all 5 builds. We might have a few scrap pieces left that we might be selling a lot cheaper than the metals shops. We will see.
So RaRa, we might have all the materials before Christmas. Looking forward to starting the builds.
Right now I\'m getting ready to start buying materials to cnc my mill. Will try to have my mil cnc-ed by Feb 1st and ready for one piece bolts and other things.
If your in that cold blast area stay warm here we are having about a 7 to 10 day mini heat wave going to be 5 to 10 degrees warmer than normal for this time of the year. High 82 to 84 everyday.

Well Thanks to the Jackel I now have 12 inches of the 3inch tube needed for the receiver. Thanks for that deal. Well that\'s two of the five pieces that I need to get for the group.
Also on the items that I need to cnc my mill I ordered a couple of pieces for the 4th axis. They were on sale at about 30% off.

Always looking for more. Got anything?

Tim,
This can be a difficult project for a novice.
Using scrap material only adds to the difficulty.

Cutter
Thanks for your thoughts. Somehow I think that we will get the project done. The scrap that I just bought was from someone that choose not to finish his Gatling gun project. Sold off everything but the piece that he just sold me. A 12 inch long piece of Brass tubing that is 3 inch in dia. with a 1/16 inch wall. See Desc. 48-09.

Well one of the folks in our group just got some more scrap in and has turned it down all it for his barrels. After cutting several barrels in half and running them in his small home HF lathe he said that he is ready to take them to the machine shop that we are going to use. Using his HF lathe he turned everything down to .60 and is planning to take the final cuts on 24\" lathe. So sounds like we have 10 barrels of the 50 that we need roughed in.
If anyone out there has a barrel for sale or know where we can get some at a fair price please let me know. In an email with Dave B he stated that he is out and looks like he may not have a few for a while. Cutter just sold his group. When we started the group we had planned on getting 5 barrel sets from Dave B.. So one set down 4 to go.
Trying to get some pricing from a barrel maker. So working on that one also. If we go that route then I\'ll have a lot of barrel blanks for sale for anyone that needs some.

What is an HF lathe?  Never heard of it in 50 years of machining.

HF  -->> Harbor Freight -- one of the low end China products. I also have a HF lathe. I also have a sherline lathe and mill for when I need the thousands numbers.
This is what the two of us have.

For what it\'s worth - I bought mostly 10-22 takeoffs from rimfirecentral.com. I advertised and also bought barrels offered for sale. I ended up with 2 Springfields, 1 Sears, 1 Winchester and 8 Ruger 10-22\'s.

Turning the barrels while holding size and finish is not a lot of fun. I did mine between centers with a dog (real old school) and by using a very sharp tool and light cuts did okay. There are several posts here bemoaning the turning of barrels and a couple of good approaches. I also left the barrels long until after they were chambered and fitted to the barrel plate. I used the method first shown by Cutter that uses wedges and barrel tendons to secure the barrels. While the barrels are matched to a location they actually fit and headspace in any hole. Chambers were reamed using a Clymer reamer that I have had forever and controlled for depth using standard headspace gauges and a depth mic.

After the chambers were completed and the extractor groove cut using woodruff key cutter - the barrels (12), were indexed in my mill, cut to length and hexed on the ends. Using this approach there was a recovery path if something went amiss in the machining of the chamber end. The barrel could be cut off and the end recut while still maintaining the proper overall length.

Hope this helps, your mileage may vary.

Thanks for that link.
Planning on using \"\"\"method first shown by Cutter that uses wedges and barrel tendons to secure the barrels\"\"\". Looked at it and reviewed it more than once during this learning and planning and materials gathering stage.
Thanks also for your barrel notes. From what I understand in talking on the phone with Wes he did small 3 to 4 inch areas of the barrel turning till the full length of the barrel was turned down to about .6 inches dia. His next planned step is to put it into the machine shop\'s 24 inch lathe for the finally shaping. Sorry can\'t seem to remember the name on the machine shop lathe but it\'s a good one.
As far as barrel buying goes, I sure let the group miss the boat there. I had hopes that we could just all call up and buy the barrel group from Dave B and that part would be done. But as far as cash out (not time) Wes has kept his costs lower than Dave B\'s price, but Thank God that Wes is at a stage in his life where he enjoys being in his garage working on his HF lathe and drinking a cup of joe.
Now I\'m working on buying a barrel here and a barrel there till I get enough for the group. Also sorry that I missed Cutters barrel group.
Well anyone have any left over parts from their builds that they would like to sell??
Cashed in a few dollars of scrap at our local junkyard the other day. Went through their Brass pile again and nothing new that would help out on our builds. They have several pieces of Brass round that are in the 7/8 inch dia to 1 inch dia that we might be able to turn down to needed sizes. It\'s about 1/2 the price of what I could buy it from the online companies just needs some resizing. Did buy a few pieces already.

I used ruger 10-22 stainless barrells for my D&E gun.   That worked out excellent.
People are always playing with customizing ruger 10-22\'s so a steady stream of barrells is always out there, and cheap.

Cutter - THANKS - Funds are heading your way with tomorrow\'s mail.

Well I grabbed a piece of hex stock and started working with it on 1/1/2014. Going to make the Brass hex nuts with it and the two rounded end pieces. So I\'ve started off on mine with doing a few of the small pieces. Pics will be done and posted on a building blog later.

Wes has all 10 of his barrels roughed in. All turned down to about .60, he is going to turn them down to .50 or .500 when we go down to the machine shop. Final cuts will be on the South Bend 24 inch lathe that we can use.

When I start in on a few of my barrels I\'ll try to post a few pics on how he did it as I will be roughing them down on a small Chinese HF lathe. Of the 5 members of our group three of us have the same HF lathe. Of course that company makes them for at least 54 or 5 others US companies.

Well the project lead (retired tool and die maker) and I went over to the scrap yard today and bought a few things. He found a piece that he said would work great for several yokes and several other pieces. We had a great trip talking almost all of the way there and back about some of the milling and lathe things that we had done over the years. Also about equipment that the shops that he worked in had and what we both would like to own and have in our garages. Lots of talk however. That said at least one of our group has a full machine shop in his back yard. We meet at his house in a few weeks to start off the 2014 Gatling builds. More on that and pics later.
