What metal should I use?

I am getting ready to start my rgg bolt carrier. The meterial list calls for brass, I just can\'t afford it especially if I screw up. I was going to make it out of steel or alloy steel. Anybody have any suggestions on steel type and grade?

Screw that brass is thru the roof, steel would be fine... My next one will be out of 6061 aluminum... Witch will probably be fine!

You might also consider making the carrier in two pieces. I made mine this way and it simplified the boring of the 10 bolt chambers.

I made my carrier block, barrel plates, recoil plate, and cocking mechanism from 17-4 for the only reason that it was the first bar of steel I found at the scrap yard that was 3 inches in dia. and cheap. My bolts were made from bar ends of 303 SS I dug out of the scrap barrel at work. I had some oil-lite bronze bar stock in my toolbox so I turned and bored my own bushings and thrust washers. I say use what is readily available, within reason.

I had started making my bolts out of 12L14 but i figured that it would be to soft, so i switched and made them out of A2 do you  think that the 12L14 bolts would have been fine?

I think the 12L14 would have been fine for the bolts. It wouldn\'t hurt to make the bolt caps out of the A2 though.

Nitewatchman, are there pics of your two piece carrier block posted in a thread somewhere? I wish I had read this thread before I machined mine. Did you key it with a pin, or just match drill and tap the two halves?

I will get some pictures up of the details.

The two halves of the carrier were indexed on a 3/16\" dowel pin and centered on a 3/8\"shouder bolt for machining. This allowed the 10 holes to be bored in both pieces without the length being too long. This also simplified the machining of the 10 flats on the front half of the carrier. A counterbore and rabbit were added to the mating parts. After halves were completed the center hole was hex broached as an assembly along with the rear barrel plate and the front barrel plate. All the parts were held in time using the 3/16\" dowel pins.
