22 Long Versus 22 Short

When I purchased my D&E plans I obtained the drawings (Broadwell only) for use of 22 longs. Using 22 longs begs a few issues:
1)  Why were the models initially designed to take 22 shorts?  Was there a relationship of the original caliber to that of the short?
2)  If one elects to go with the 22 long, are there ramifications?  I noticed that while the broadwell dimensions accommodate a longer bullet, that there were no revisions to internal gun dimensions, materials to be used, hardening of parts, stiffness of springs, etc.  Is modification of the plans for the internal workings as simple as ratio and proportion adjustments, or are there other considerations?

I did a lot of internal modifications to my gun in order to accommodate 22lr.
