Extractor Spring Depth

I don’t know if I’m missing something or what, but I can find the depth on my prints for the extractor springs. I drilled one already with a dimension I thought it referred to on the print, 0.093” hole 0.300” deep, but that broke through the recoil pins on the other side; now I have to repair that bolt or use a spare. I thought the hole depth made sense since the springs said they’re 0.375” long, but I guess I was wrong.


Any help is appreciated. I planned on using BIC lighter springs, but not being a smoker I don’t have any laying around to check the dimensions with. Thanks in advance.

Are you using the RG-G style extractors from their prints?

Yes, I have them already cut out as well. The extractor slots are all cut, now I want to get the spring holes drilled while I have the mill set up and indicated.


Also, what brand of “cheap lighters” are people using? I tried one of the smooth rounded BIC lighters and the springs are two different sizes, and the smallest diameter ones won’t fit in a 0.093” hole I drilled. I haven’t tried the REALLY cheap square shaped lighters.

Thanks Cutter. That’s exactly what I did, but it drilled all the way through. I didn’t measure anything before I drilled, but after machining the extractor slots it’s only about 0.270” thick. Is the print meaning to drill the spring holes BEFORE the extractor slots? The bolts appear to be about 0.330” thick before, so after I’d need to drill them to 0.240” depth, leaving 0.030” on the bottom.


Does that sound right? Am I missing something?

The bolt is .418 diameter at the hole location.

.300 deep should leave .118

For some reason I can’t upload pictures, but the hole is exactly 2.187” from the rear end, and 1.313” from the front, and the depth is exactly 0.300”, I just verified all of my measurements. The hole break through 1/2 of the recoil pin and is exposed, so I don’t know where I went wrong. I’m not tying to be obnoxious, I just don’t know where I went wrong, and I can’t post pictures to show what I mean.


Is there a trick to posting pics?

That’s pretty spot on as well. I guess I’ll have to shorten the hole length and adjust from there. I’m not sure what else to do.

.300 deep from top of bolt will not break through .335 thick

So then the prints must mean to drill the spring hole before the extractor slots, because at that point it is 0.335” thick, but after the extractor slot is machined it’s only 0.260” thick. The prints show the spring hole farther back in the diagram than the dimensions actually are.


Thanks for the responses Cutter and humoring my stupid questions. I’ve been known to overlook details and miss something small, sometimes it’s good to have a second set of eyes. My dad (ZeebeesDad) is building one as well but his is in AZ while he splits time living in NV, so he can’t look at what he did.

For anyone who needs to know, the lighters You need for extractor springs are “Scripto” brand. BIC are too large for the 0.093” diameter holes, but the Scripto brand fits perfect.
