My 50 Round Mag - Cutter's drawings

Just finished my 50 round magazine based on Cutter\'s drawings (Thank you Jerry) and thought I\'d post a few pictures. My barrel plate gear is an integral part of the barrel plate since I\'m starting on my second version of the RGG gun. The magazine appears to work great - but still need to build the mount for it.

Nice job on Cutters drum magazine! I was looking at the last picture you posted. I am not sure what you did. It looks like you chamfered the barrels. It that correct?  Also what changes did you make to the carrier block and bolts?

Cutter,

The material is aluminum oxide blasted steel tubing. My plans are to Cerakote the assembly eventually.

I did indeed chamfer the barrels. This was done after I read this article http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek089.html- seemed to fix several issues with barrel and extractor alignment. I also modified the the bolts and the bolt carrier based on my disappointment with these portions of my first RGG build. Many have made one piece bolts but I wanted to make a bolt that addressed several issues:


1) Little or no silver soldering - did not quite meet this goal the cam follower is solder to the bolt

2) Adjustable firing pin length

3) No rotation of firing pin and thus I could make it any shape that I wanted

4) Better extraction and ejection


So I came up with my own version of the bolt that is .5 inch from end to end with dual extractors and a ejection system based on a bolt action rifle. The odd shape you see in the base of the bolt carrier in each bolt slot is the ejection trip mechanism.


None of this is really field tested but works very well in my proto type.


I attached a couple pictures that give some more detail of the bolts construction.

Cutter\'s recent Six Shooter post prompted me to update my progress on my Gatling gun primarily in the rear gear assembly area. I have encapsulated most of the gear and crank into a single removable assembly.

Hi Jeff,
In one picture of your gun, there appears to be a horizontally mounted gear
in your extraction port.
I can\'t figure that out. What is it ?

I found the picture you are referring to and it indeed it looks like a gear. But I can assure you there is no gear. Darned if I know what it is in the picture.

The bolt changes actually work very well - the extractors have never failed to pull and flip out fired or un-fired cartridges (even my very beat up test cartridges). The concave taper barrels also work well - no extractor alignment issues or firing pin pock marks. I also lock the barrels in position with a simple allen set screw on a flat on the barrel which means I can adjust the head space on a per barrel basis - some may think this is not secure enough but so far no problems (a least on a .22 version).

The problem I have encountered is the feeding of the bullet has to be more precise than in the original design. This is a by product of the flat guide for the bolt. If the bullet doesn\'t hit the near the center of the guide when it drops then it is likely going fall to the side and jam - making proper firing operation very dependent on cranking speed. I think I have a solution but have not finish building it yet - so who knows if it will be the right answer.

Thanks for the update. Several of us (see my intro thread) are planning to make personal RG-G Gatlings starting in Jan, 2014. So trying to gather as much info whats good bad, new ideas, best of etc. before we start.

Any thoughts or improvements ideas would be great.

Cutter and others,

Cutter - Since you have been making several variations of drum magazines I wondered if you or anyone else ever considered modifying one of these.

AR15.22 50RD DRUM - they are $60 bucks at other sources.

Seems to me it would be fairly easy to make a new drum tower (their name for the final piece that snaps into the gun) and have a usable 50 round magazine.

Granted it does not have the era look of the gat but would be a nice experiment and could be covered if desired.
I especially like the rotor section that looks like a over grown gear to keep the round separated while feeding.

I have ordered one to experiment with so will keep the group posted.

I have seen them offered on line, but never thought about
adapting for a gat. I\'ll be following your progress, good luck

Note from everything that I\'ve heard about that drum is that it takes a break in period. Don\'t think about loading 50 in and it working perfect first time out is what I\'ve heard. That said they say after a break in and good loading you can run 45 to 50 rds no problem.

So can anyone get one to work on a gatling??
