I\'m working on drawing 48-20 detail G, I drilled and tapped a piece of .500 CRS held in a 5C collet and put a healthy champfer  in to deal with the rolled threads running out near the head.

I screwed in the SHCS, and turned down the diameter with one pass.  1500 rpm, .002 feed 0.055 doc and got a nice finish.   Slow sucked.  I\'ll have to scotcbrite a couple that I got a poor finish on while I was figuring out how to make these.

I have to put the .218 dia hole in.  Can HSS handle it or should I buy a carbide drill bit?  My other thought is to take my mapp gas torch to the fastener and take it to red and let it air cool.

Ideas welcome.

HSS worked better than I expected.  I didn\'t have a cobalt drill available.  To make it more do-able, I predrilled the bolts with a small diameter carbide drill I had laying around to clear the drill web.  The drill edge failed just breaking through the the last of ten bolts.

The threaded portion is still 3/8\", I haven\'t shortened them yet so the drill had extra work to do.
