Some of you guys have been building these guns for some time. And maybe what I do for a living might make me think about what steels I might use. At work I use alot of 303 stainless, it cuts well with carbide and fine surface finishes are possible. But is it a little soft? I think of 303 stainless as bubble gum. I know were\'re talking a .22 long rifle cartridge so the pressures are low. I\'m looking for I material I can blue. When I make a custom rifle I usually use 4130 chromemoly, it blues well and it\'s up to the pressure curve. I\'m talking bolts. recoil plates and barrel plates. What do you guys think?

4130 would be fine, I would stay away from 303 stainless. If you want to use stainless for gun parts use 17p4 prehardened or 416 stainless. They both machine great with carbide in the prehardened state. I would also use 4140 or 4130 prehardened also. Also 1144 stressproof seems to be used with great success. I prefer 4140 prehardened as it machines well, is easily blued, and has great wear properties. 4140 prehard is also very common in a lot of applications as well as firearms manufacturing so it is easy to find.

but then it was Aluminum

I agree with both you guys, but for me it\'s only a hobby, building toys.

Some 4130 chromoly would be my choice for the real deal.

Cutter, I\'m not a critic, 303 stainless must work well. It must handle the presure of a .22 long rifle cartridge just fine. I tend to over build things. I\'m thankful that this forum is available for projects like this. I mean no disrespect. This gun would work well if it was made out of 1018 cold rolled.But for different sections of the gun I would like to have a blued finish.

I tend to build with material I have on hand. My gun ended up using 8620, A2, 316 SS, 4140, 360 Brass, H13, Low Carbon, and 303 SS.
